Just wondering... Do someone of you having throttle problems test the computer using standard AMD Bootcamp drivers (19.50)?
I’m currently using official drivers and, apart from some screen resolutions not showing in options in some games, I did not experienced thermal throttling problems... I play RDR2, HZD, TW3... with no performance issues (room temperature about 25-27ºC in this sensing, MacBook placed on a metal raiser stand).
I’ll do some more stress testing while running Afterburner to look at temperature, FPS and CPU-GPU clocks... but the gaming experience is great...

Yes throttling is the same with the Apple base bootcamp drivers. It’s not a driver issue.

How well is HZD playing on this mac? It plays well: about 50fps at 1080p using high-ultra settings

So, I've been testing the thermal pads mods for a couple of weeks now, results are quite good on GPU-heavy games. Prior to the mod I wasn't able to play anything, the GPU would always throttle to around 500Mhz, 20W and even lower, to 300Mhz. On CPU intensive games such as far cry 5, performance was even worse, CPU would downclock itself to 9W and even less than nominal frequencies. A couple of weeks ago, I opened the backplate of the Mac and added a few thermal pads, as some users have reported huge improvements. The idea, the VRM components where overheating due to having just passive cooling in a very thin chasis. At first, results where quite mixed, room temps around 25ºC, directly on a wood table, I was able to maintain 900Mhz on Far Cry 5, which also requires the CPU to be over 3Ghz to avoid stutters and properly use the GPU. That was way better than the default performance, though not quite what I wanted, so I recently bought a cooling aluminium stand with a fan. Right now, I am able to maintain CPU without any throttling whatsoever, with a limit at 3.2Ghz. GPU stays around the 50W mark for quite a long time now, though eventually it throttles to 45W (again Far Cry 5 which is very CPU heavy). On GPU-heavy games like Doom Eternal, GPU will never, ever throttle, staying at 50W however long I want to play. Temps stay around the mid 80s, never seen the GPU scale to the 90s.
In essence, the laptop plays fairly OK on GPU-oriented games, but still, it suffers when CPU generates a ton of heat. I would recommend anyone struggling with this machine to try this solution, specially if this is your only PC gaming solution right now. As always though, if you can, get a decent desktop PC, 5500M performance, even without throttling is quite mediocre for today's standards.

Hi, I just bought MBP 16 w 5500M to replace my MBP 2017 with 560 hoping it would allow me to play some games decently. However, it turned out the laptop throttles down its GPU too much. I'm so disappointed in this purchase, I'm considering returning it. Does 5300M have the same kind of throttling problems? I read some articles saying the 5300M might be a better option since it throttles less.

Return it if you can, because there isnt going to be some magic software or driver fix thats going to make it better. You can try the thermal pad thing some are doing, but that means you have to open up the bottom and you are turning your whole bottom cover into a raving hot heat sync. I'd never do that. Back it went.

an external GPU in bootcamp may help this machine work as a main working machine and entertainment or it's better to invest egpu money in a dedicated pc / console?

Hi guys, I joined to share this. I have the 16” with 9880H and 5500M. Like you I was facing the frustration of ~400MHz GPU after 10mins in games. It’s the VRM’s!!! They get hot quick and trigger this slowdown. A few thermal pads to bridge them to the bottom case solves the problem! https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/gs6bal/2019_mbp_16_vrm_cooling_mod/ HERE IS THE SOLUTION! I have done this mod and can confirm over 1GHz GPU for hours on end in PUBG. My MacBook: imgur.com/gallery/xC47z1ACredit to OP on Reddit for FINALLY solving this! Hope this helps! Run on over to reddit and share your experience!

I have also done the VRM thermal pad mod and have had great success. I have not had a single instance of throttling in 2 weeks, I have also had success with the latest August drivers. One thing I wanted to add though, with some games (destiny specifically) you will see reduced frame rates while you load into zones for the first time. After playing the game for a few hours though everything began performing flawlessly (consistent 60 fps w/ vsync on and no throttling). Prior to the VRM mod and the august drivers I was running a force installed AMD driver for a different card to varying degrees of success, but so far this has by far been the most stable. One thing I would recommend is getting a vertical stand and a clip on desk fan, and blowing the fan on bottom of the laptop to keep it from getting too hot. I followed the same guide linked above by bobba84.

Guys, check Apple Software Update. Did updating Boot Camp drivers to 6.1.13 help solve this issue?

Guys, check Apple Software Update. Did updating Boot Camp drivers to 6.1.13 help solve this issue? Also curious about this, since the release notes say they fix "a stability issue that could occur during heavy CPU load on 16-inch MacBook Pro", which sure sounds like it could be a thermal throttling fix.

Well why aren’t you testing it ?

Well why aren’t you testing it ? I actually was testing it when you were posting that, and the answer is, as far as I can tell: no improvement, unfortunately.
