Before reading: I'm already using throttlestop at full blast + Intel XTU to limit the CPU power drain to 11W tops After reaching 90º the gpu clock throttles from 1200 to 800mhz, then to 500mhz (and with that my fps). Any idea why?
I'm using Jan 2020 Blue Drivers, I've tried Red but the fps is lower. Since the CPU never draws more than 11W nor gets hotter than 80º, It has to be something with the GPU
My best hope is that either they fix it in 20.3.1; or that maybe via wattman I could force the Clock to something lesser than its max

Hi alberto90, Struggling with the same problem for days now, on 5500m... having similar gpu throttling, checking every day for march drivers but not working on 16” for now Did you tried wattman yet please let us know if you had the chance.

I’m using throttlestop with only “disable turbo” enabled I guess cpu @ 2.23 on task manager performance tab.
You are our best hope Mat hope you get well soon and have some time to solve mbp16 march driver error.
Cheers

How about downloading MSI afterburner and seeing if 'force constant voltage' is checked in the settings?

How about downloading MSI afterburner and seeing if 'force constant voltage' is checked in the settings? In afterburner Force constant voltage is checked even after reboot but if I try to enable the” Extend offical clocking limits “ and press apply it asks for reboot but after restart it’s again unchecked I have no idea how can I try the wattman to underclock the gpu :/ also as in readme I set the unoffical overclocking mode to with PowerPlay support Also it looks like I dont have Tuning tab under Performance tab in radeon software amd support site has note saying The availability of Tuning options will depend on the gpu being used.

Just tried that that (graph below) but in contrast with only using intel XTU and limitting the CPU max power short to 11W, now the CPU takes both more energy and gets to 92°+ , and still get the gpu clock throttled to 600mhz my current optimizations: 2020 Blue edition Afterburner - Force constant voltage - Disable ULPS Unofficial overclocking : without PowerPlay support Throttlestop: - Disable turbo - BD prochot - Speedstep MacsFanControl at full blast Using 2020 Blue drivers, so no Wattman for me. As the prev guy said, is there a way to force the core clock? Graph: Results after disabling turbo on throttlestop. Now the CPU remains on a steady 2.5ghz, but the temp and wattage go higher than if I'd just limit the cpu to 11W

I have the same problem, would love to know how to fix it.

Same problem, but currently i'm playing with opened window (8-10C outside, 1 meter to laptop), kinda works. CODMW warzone goes smoothly, quite always under throttl (86-87) temp point. But it's not the solution at all. Mb later i'll remove bottom case and buy extra fans/cooling pad (i don't want to do this) or buying eGPU would solve dGPU temp problem at all.

Hi I have same problem. When you lower the graphic settings to optimal value you will be able to play games at constant fps. You need setup limits for your gpu because in windows it goes over limit and then throttle down. There is no way to do some overclocking because afterburner have not support for 5500 gpu yet. I ordered eGPU its best way for stable experience gaming on MBpro and save your MBpro life.
Tip: There are games without fps cap option. Use then Radeon Chill to cap your fps at 60.

Interesting, would gigabyte amd radeon RX 580 8gb gaming box be better than my dGPU 5500m 4gb (using via tb3 it's 12-15% worse than pcie3)? I don't have much options to order anything else. dGPU temp's problem is really annoying.

That’s my temporary solution , capping for vsync at 60fps. that and using a controller doesn’t feel bad. but maaaan, without capping I’ve seen what my video card is capable of, why conforming to 60 when you can have easily 100+

How about downloading MSI afterburner and seeing if 'force constant voltage' is checked in the settings? I have a similar issue in Division 2. Game runs stable 60 FPS, GPU/CPU temps are below 80c, GPU core clocks are jumping all over the place depending on what is going on on the screen drawing from 20W to 50W and 400Mhz to 1200Mhz respectively. Then for no reason, GPU caps at 30W or so with clocks dropping to 600-800 and FPS tanks. It usually is triggered by GPU intense scene but does not subdue, unless I unplug the power cord, then magically GPU kicks back in to 50W/1100Mhz and rock solid 60 fps in the same intense scene. Plugging the power cord back in gets things back to 30W low fps. This is not a thermal issue. I have used Furmark to stress test the GPU, it goes up to 100 utilization with 75c and drawing stable 50W from the wall no throttling whatsoever. I am using Throttlestop to limit CPU to 2.3Ghz, no turbo and macfancontrol on fullblast.

I am running COD warzone on MacBook Pro 16
It seems that in COD warzone my fps is being powerlimited and that may be the problem. I was at mid 70’s FPS. But it went down do low 40’s after 20 mins
My temps were cool being 67c for cpu and 71c for GPU.
The base clock is 1000 for the Radeon 5500m 8gb
But it was only giving around 550MHz
Which if I understand correct because I am kind of a noob it is not being fed nearly enough power.
Also when I first opened the game I was getting 85 fps with
Around 1100MHz
So I concluded that there was a correlation, and the gpu is being power limited
Here’s the thing though
How do we fix it?
