How long have you been able to keep the core clock at 900-1200Mhz while gaming? Have you changed the drivers between before and after applying this mod? I have tried two sessions of two hours and it was performing fine with the mod and a laptop cooler underneath. I have tried just January and the latest October drivers with this mod, the latest ones perform much better. I did see the thread here that there is also a new official driver update for bootcamp I might try that also... Before applying the mod I tried all the drivers January, April , August and October all Red and blue but only the VRM mod gave me stable playing or rendering experience. (always with laptop cooler for extra peace of mind)

Tried this mod earlier today and am truly blown away with the results. I can't stop playing games lol. bootcampdrivers.freeforums.net/post/5839/threadI highly recommend my guide on 48hz Gaming which gives this mod extra room for cooler temps.

Has anyone tried the Thermal Grizzly Minus 8 pads? I'm about to order some but I'm unsure of the amount and thickness(es) that I need. It's supposedly one of the highest-rated thermal pads with good compressibility.
They range in thickness from 0.5 to 3.0 mm and I think at least 4.5 mm is required to get a good contact with the case, is it not? Unfortunately they just sold out of the 3 mm thickness at a local retailer, but I can get a larger (10 x 10 cm) 2 mm pad and double it up. Would 4 mm be too much? One of those should be more than enough right?
Is this a good approach or would anyone recommend a different combination of size and thickness?
Looking forward to fixing this throttling once and for all!
Edit: I ended up buying the large (10 x 10 cm) 2 mm pad, which was pricey and probably way too much, but I wanted to have too much than too little (to account for my probable mistakes installing it for the first time) as well as having enough to ensure a good coverage and having to worry less about creating a patchwork of bits during installation. If I end up with heaps left over maybe I can offer it here.
I can't wait to finally get the performance we were promised. I should invoice Apple for the purchase price!

Wow this forum is quiet lately!
Unfortunately I haven’t yet applied the pad fix because when I bought a P5 driver to open the damn thing they sent the wrong one! I should be able to do it in the next day or two. I won’t know for sure until after but I might have enough pad left over for another couple of fixes. Would anybody be interested in the leftover pad? I’ll take reasonable offers which may or may not include cash money.
But please wait until after I do the fix. Take photos and show some benchmarking results! It’s kind of weird how heavy the stuff feels. It’s mostly ceramic from what I can tell but is somehow flexible and “pad-like”.

Has anyone experienced VRM modification performance issues once a body skin by dbrand (or any other manufacturer like Lention) has been applied to the bottom cover of a modded laptop? I did some research but not much information is there. The information I found says it won't affect body cooling performance in noticeable manner, like +1-2°C at most.

Hi, Yesterday I ended up on this article on Reddit proposing a fix. I'm thinking of doing it, the reviews are extremely positive. What do you guys think? I tried it out a few weeks ago, also undervolted my Radeon Pro 5500M and set my monitor to 48Hz refresh rate. When you combine those three things you get really good results! Now everything runs smooth. Gpu Clock is at 1400Mhz. Gpu Temperature around 80-90C°. Played State of Decay 2 for 2 hours without throtteling on high detail settings.

I finally got around to doing the mod. It was a bit stressful the first time getting the case off and even back on again. The bottom case is noticeably hotter as expected. I still experience throttling, but probably not as much. I'm not using any kind of cooling pad however and typically just use the laptop in bed on top of a laptop case or blanket, which doesn't help. Using Macs Fan Control to set the fans to maximum is required and definitely helps. I also reduced the number of CPU cores from 16 to 12 using Windows system configuration. I haven't tried undervaluing as I didn't think that was possible. How do you do that and with which software? I might have a look in the case again and try to improve it. Some pics to follow.
