I'm a VR developer and wanted to point out some interesting things I found out about the 5600m GPU. The 5500m worked fine with many VR platforms with limited performance. I upgraded to the 5600m to find it outperformed my "VR Ready" laptop in benchmarks. However, I came to find a fatal flaw with the 5600m with VR. It does NOT support Direct Display Mode. The GPU treats the headsets as external monitors and no amount of tweaking things made it any better. Tried this with Rift, Rift S, and Valve Index. Direct Display Mode takes VR content and renders it directly to the headset without Windows treating it as an additional monitor. I've tried this with Windows 10 1903 and 2004. I also tried force feeding the Red driver from April on the 5600m. It gave me the gamer options and reported the right number of cores, VRAM, memory type, but called it a 5500m instead of a 5600m. None of this had any effect. Now, I have every relevant VR HMD in at my studio so I'm happy to test any configuration if anyone has any ideas. I've included a screenshot of the error message produced by SteamVR. It stays stuck in Extended Display Mode no matter what is changed in the settings. Attachments:

I can't even get it to run. I installed the latest everything, including AMD's drivers. I am using the Oculus Link; it hard reboots the machine after a crash in VR. I can only run it reliably for a few minutes, and not smoothly. I suspect we will need drivers from here to get it to work. I hope we can get these for the 5600M later this year!

I really hope this is a driver issue. This bug is coming up in other areas of the net as well.

Anyone figured out how to prevent those crashes?
I'm also noticing regular crashes (black screen then the machine reboots) in VR after a few minutes. I've played up to 40 minutes straight (when lucky) but most of the time it crashes before 10 minutes have elapsed.
I tried the latest October driver from BCD.com but unfortunately it still reboots. I'm in the process of trying various tweaks and other versions of BCD drivers, but I'm not too optimistic at this point...
On the other hand, I've been playing Death Stranding at max settings for hours and the thing runs great without any crashes / reboots. This only occurs in VR, it seems. Can anyone take a guess at what's different in VR that might cause this? Maybe the load on the GPU is just much higher? Maybe stress-testing it in non-VR might reveal a deeper issue.

Small update: Anyone with a 5600m that is interested in figuring this out with other 5600m owners should join the (already ~40-strong) Discord server here: discord.gg/verpuj4 (check out the VR channel in particular)

Hello,
I have the official AMD drivers. And I haven't had a problem with VR at all.
I am playing Half Life: Alyx, and other (steam and oculus) VR games without a problem using Virtual Desktop @ 90hz.
Is your problem related specifically to this website's driver?
I am tempted to try it, but if it won't work with VR, I rather not.
Thanks!

The thing that doesn't work is desktop VR devices (Rift-S, Valve Index, Vive, etc). They plug directly into the machine and need direct display mode to function. To my knowledge, the 5600m still doesn't support this.
