You are talking about comparing performance of a top desktop solution, needing over 240W alone, with a mobile GPU, using about 50W at full power...
This is not related to thermal throttling.
I was referring to thermal throttling problem and I can say, in my experience, that performances are very good for a laptop solutions and I didn’t experience any throttling issue while gaming for 4-5 hours in RDR2 at High-Ultra setting.
I tested it with MSI afterburner on; monitoring both power consumption, usage% and clock of both GPU and CPU.
I’m running it on my MBP16 mounting a 5600m supported by i9 2.3GHz. FPS go from a minimum of 40 in very crowded an complex areas (Saint Denis) and/or during heavy post-processing scenes (mostly at dawn/dusk because of the “long shadows”) up to over 90fps (vsync off) in open areas; I’m running it at 1920x1080, with custom settings (motion blur off, reflections at Mid, almost everything else at Ultra, except shadows at high, volumetric effects at medium-high settings).
I played the game for may hours (yesterday over 4hrs continuously), I did not notice any drastic drop in performance, GPU is at 99% usage almost all of the time; CPU is (50-80%); temperature of both is about 75ºC up to 79ºC without any need of FansControl SW.
Probably I’m just lucky; probably I did found a “sweet spot” for settings... but I can now enjoy RDR2 on the go, with the same machine I’m using in my job for heavy graphics and for productive activities (I work in the videogame industry).
Of course, this is not even near to what an RTX 2080 can achieve...
But I’m not expecting it to be, since the whole laptop (CPU, GPU, Monitor and cooling system included) is needing less than half the power of the external GPU alone needs...
Anyway, I’ll run further tests using other heavy AAA games, just to see how the MBP is handling them and if thermal throttling occurs.
Should you have any suggestion on (and settings), feel free to suggest.
At present, I already tested Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption, X-COM Chimera Squad, The Witcher 3.
