So, here's the deal:
I own a MacBook Pro, 15 inch 2017 with touchbar. I had Windows build 1909 already installed. I bought a Razer core X and a AMD RX 580 gpu.
I spent a few weeks reading as much as I could about installing the drivers in order to be able to use Oculus Link with my Oculus Quest to play some Oculus Rift games.
So today I was going to try to set it al up.
I restarted in bootcamp and there was an initial problem with startup. This was just a straight Bootcamp startup with nothing connected. I don't know what the problem was but I got no screen after the windows logo so I thought I would just try to restart with the egpu connected (with an external monitor via the egpu HDMI port) and powered on and see what happens after rebooting via holding down power and then restarting again.
Next I got a screen that said "windows was experiencing a startup problem" and it asked me if I wanted to restart or allow windows to try to fix it. I originally chose "have windows fix it" but the next set of options included a just restart one and I chose that.
It then rebooted with only the image on the external monitor. It promptly shutdown on it's own and then restarted again. To my surprise when it restarted again only the external monitor was showing an image and when I logged all the AMD driver software, the ADRENALINE software) was installed and apparentl working exactly as it shoudl.
I checked "device Manager" and indeeed both the AMD 550 driver (for the included in my MBP discreet gpu) and the AMD RX 580 driver's were present. I should mention that the last time I checked the graphics drivers in bootcamp all it said was "basic Microsoft driver" or something to that effect. Now, as I mentioned, both appropriate AMD drivers were installed.
I checked msinfo to see which driver was currently powering the external monitor and it was the RX 580. I checked inside the AMD software settings and the driver was listed as ADRENALINE.
This was the EXACT setup I wanted - no internal display and the RX 580 running everything.
I downloaded the Oculus Link beta app and ran through setup, downloaded The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, and proceeded to play without issue. I didn't check frame rates but it sure seemed smooth as could be.
Does anyone have any idea how this all happened without me having to literally do anything? Apparently Windows recognized exactly what was going on and configured itself perfectly without any input from me other than restarting a few times.
