Hello, I recently bought a MBP 16" off eBay with maxed out specs and the 5500M 8GBS. After testing some games I noticed that the FPS drops a lot (from 60-40s to 15) after playing for some time and the fans kick in, when doing some research I was told that it was called VRM throttling so I applied the settings here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbKmmbSlf1Y) but it didn't do much. I also came across the cooling mod solution and since I'm not too big on hardware I'm afraid to cause some damage to my machine by doing it, I've read that it could cause damage to the battery or it would make the machine burning hot to the point where it can't even be used on your lap.
I have also noticed that I don't think I have the throttling issue on macOS, I downloaded Shadow of the Tomb Raider and it preformed better on macOS than Windows even before it dropped down frames, it also didn't throttle on macOS after playing for about an hour unlike Windows where it throttled about 20minutes in.
Can someone help me out fix this issue? Does it happen in all the 16" models? Has anyone found any final solution?
The 5500M seems like a really good GPU, no eGPU is even necessary for my type of gaming. I have until the first week of October to return it so I'm trying to make sure that there is some kind of a solution before doing so. Thanks in advance!

It's a good machine, but I upgraded to 5600M before Apple goes all M1X, and its 70% faster with no drops. It's been running really well and I recommend it. Depends what games you play, I am on Battlefield 5 and 2042, with 60 - 70 FPS average. I heard there is a solution to the 5500M thermal issue. Here is the video tutorial.

This is easy, just make sure you get the right tools for disassembling the bottom housing plate and make sure you remove the bottom housing plate the right way or you dent it. Here's a video regarding the bottom plate removal (make sure to read comments by @schmolinski2068 & @coccoinomane256): You'll also need thermal pads. I recommend stacking Arctic ACTPD00006A 0.5 mm because it's cheaper to get one 145×145 mm piece and slice it to fit. I also recommend you updating thermal paste of your CPU and GPU to get bet results. Here's a full tutorial with all tools required: You can still use the best regular thermal paste Noctua NT-H2 if you're confident to disassemble laptop in 1 year to re-paste it. However the best solution is to use thermal phase change material, such as Honeywell PTM7950 or Laird TPCM7250 (the latter is easier to find legit), instead of thermal paste, just make sure to use 0.25 mm thickness, not 0.20 mm. The disassembly is quite tedious and TPCM will last forever (2000+ working hours). You can check this video and this post to get the idea on the outcome: Good luck and happy New Year! P.S. Use some cloth on your working desk so you don't scratch top cover when it's upside down!
