Hey, will this damage my laptop in anyway? It's safe to use as long as you follow the guide carefully. You don't want to create an unsupported configuration.

Can this permanently damage the display? Forgot to change the Front Porch and Sync Width on my first attempt. Scared the crap out of me. This is why you have to be careful when inputting the numbers. An unsupported configuration is wrong, and scary to look at, but it should be otherwise harmless as long as you correct it.

Will this by any chance work on the 2017 15in MBP? Thank you! It doesn’t support refresh rates other than 60Hz.

Bumping the thread up - It's my absolutely favorite trick to get smoothest gaming experience on MBP16 so I want more people to know that.

I used CRU to make a new EDID for my external display, a Dell u2412m. The Dell doesn't support 48hz but does support 50hz.
For comparison, before the change and playing Forza Horizon 4 on Ultra settings 1900x1200 I could get 60fps but 98% on the gpu and occasional dropped frames and stutters. Dropping to high settings yielded smooth gameplay. I also tried 30fps and Ultra settings but it was just not smooth.
After creating the 50hz setting via CRU and changing to 50hz I can use Ultra setting in FH4 at 1900x1200 and have consistent smooth gameplay. GPU shows 75%+.
This is a good trick and glad it was posted. Was just enough to get me some extra bandwidth on the gpu to run Ultra settings and be smooth.
I have not tried this yet on the built-in 16" display on the MBP.
To create the new settings for the dell, I just copy/pasted the existing one and changed the hz from 60 to 50 then clicked OK, Restarted the graphics and 50hz was available in the dropdown. I did not make any changes to front porch etc. so not even sure I did it right. However, the monitor doesn't complain and so far seems to be OK. If there's a better way to discover what the other settings should be, I'm all ears. I tried to find a "how-to" for CRU but couldn't find one other than the authors 555 page forum thread. I wasn't up for that much reading and just tried the hz change with all else equal. Not recommended so, do at your own risk.
I have the 2019 16" mbp with 16gb ram and 5500M w/ 4gb, Apple stock bootcamp GPU drivers. Win10 home 20H2 build: 19042.685.
